Master Series Lecture: In the Company of Genies: Assyrian Art at Worcester

    Art - Lecture/Discussion

    Thursday, February 15, 2018
    6:00 PM-7:00 PM

    Conference Room

This talk aims variously to contextualize the Worcester Art Museums winged genius within the palace of the 9th-century BCE Assyrian king Ashurnasirpal II at Nimrud in modern-day Iraq, where it was one of many such figures; in the framework of the palaces (and the ancient Assyrian cultures) rediscovery in the middle of the 19th century; as well as in light of the evolution of its reception since then.

Speaker Dr. Ada Cohen is a professor of Art History and the Israel Evans Professor in Oratory and Belles Lettres at Dartmouth College. She is the author of "The Alexander Mosaic: Stories of Victory and Defeat" and "Art in the Era of Alexander the Great: Paradigms of Manhood and Their Cultural Traditions." She has co-edited and contributed to "Constructions of Childhood in Ancient Greece" and "Italy and Assyrian Reliefs from the Palace of Ashurnasirpal II: A Cultural Biography." She is also the co-author of "Inside an Ancient Assyrian Palace: Looking at Austen Henry Layards Reconstruction."

The Worcester Art Museum's Master Series gives a close up look at one or two works by six signature artists. Exhibited in select galleries throughout the Museum, these intimate displays allow for contemplation and study of some of the world's most celebrated artists. Enjoy an art talk related to one of the featured Master Series artists, plus music, cash bar - and the company of other art enthusiasts!
