Full-time opening for a Preparator - Object Mount-Maker (4 days/32 hours per week). Responsibilities include the design and fabrication of display and storage mounts for all collection and loan objects in a variety of materials. Additional responsibilities include assisting in the installation and de-installation of works of art in temporary exhibitions and permanent gallery spaces as well as assisting in the fabrication of exhibition furniture, and under the supervision of the Lead Preparator, independently fabricate and finish exhibit risers, platforms and casework and laminating and installing gallery labels and vinyl text in galleries. This position will also assist with the movement of works of art within the museum; remove and replace works of art from storage for exhibitions, loans, curatorial review, visiting scholars, and photography, including the loading/unloading art shipments from vans/trucks while communicating the details of art movement to Registrars.
The successful candidate must possess skills in silver soldering, art handling and crating, carpentry and fabrication, exhibition preparation and have knowledge of art storage and display methods, techniques, and procedures. Good manual dexterity for fine detail work and handling fragile objects and the ability to lift heavy objects; work at heights over 10 ft. and work collaboratively and cooperatively as a member of a team is essential. This position requires strong communication, interpersonal, record keeping skills. Massachusetts Class III motor vehicle operator's license required.
