The Golden age of Dutch and Flemish art included Jacob van Ruisdael, the pre-eminent landscape, seascape artist of the period. His painting "View of the IJ on a Stormy Day" is the best example of van Ruisdael's numerous similar paintings. Beautifully executed, the painting dramatically, and in great detail, conveys the dynamic character of small boats negotiating the strong winds and wind-broken waves during a storm on the IJ. His painting, and some facts of his life, will be presented along with an open discussion of this exquisite example of seventeenth century Dutch art.
