SUMMARY:Amelia and Robert H. Haley Memorial Lecture: Are We Taught the Wrong Things About Art?
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Jock Herron (TidePool Press; Harvard Graduate School of Design)\, Felipe Pereda (Harvard University\, Fernando Zóbel de Ayala Professor of Spanish Art)\, Matthias Waschek (Worcester Art Museum\, Jean and Myles McDonough Director) \n\n\n\nThis spring at Tuckerman Hall\, join us for conversation between John Herron (Harvard University)\, Felipe Pereda (Harvard University)\, and Matthias Waschek (Worcester Art Museum). At this special Director’s Talk\, Herron\, Pereda\, and Waschek will discuss the evolution of art education throughout American history. The conversation\, centered around Tales of an Epoch: The Origins of Art Education in America\, the posthumous autobiography—edited by Pereda and published by Herron’s TidePool Press—of eminent art historian\, collector\, and educator Paul J. Sachs\, will tackle a wide range of subjects\, including complex\, recurring topics in art stewardship\, education\, and interpretation. \n\n\n\nAdvance registration is highly recommended. A limited number of walk-in tickets may be available on a first-come\, first-served basis. Walk-in entry is not guaranteed if the event is sold out. \n\n\n\n\nGet tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the speakers\n\n\n\n\nJock Herron\n\n\n\nJock Herron is a Design Critic at the Harvard Graduate School of Design where he has taught for the past decade in the Masters in Design Engineering program\, a joint initiative with Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Science. A co-founder of Tidepool Press\, he edited and contributed to Mount Desert Island Modernists: Robert W. Patterson\, Edward L. Barnes and George Howe\, published recently with the Mount Desert Island Historical Society. A Worcester native\, Jock is a former chairman of the American Antiquarian Society and a former Vice President of the Worcester Art Museum. \n\n\n\n\n\nFelipe Pereda \n\n\n\nThroughout his career\, Felipe Pereda has written numerous books; his latest\, The Man Who Broke Michelangelo’s Nose\, examines the oft forgot life and work of Renaissance sculptor\, Pietro Torrigiano. For his most recent project\, he worked as the editor of Tales of an Epoch. Other topics explored in his writings include Spanish art in the late medieval and early modern periods\, art theory\, image theory\, and history of architecture.  \n\n\n\n\n\nMatthias Waschek \n\n\n\nMatthias Waschek was appointed Director of the Worcester Art Museum in November 2011. Originally from Germany\, he has a PhD in art history from Bonn University. Throughout his 30-year international career in the museum world\, Waschek has worked to connect the broader public with new thinking about art history and archaeology—as Head of Academic Programs at the Louvre Museum in Paris (1992–2003)\, as Executive Director of the Pulitzer Arts Foundation St. Louis\, Missouri (2003–2011)\, and now at the Worcester Art Museum. In addition\, he has published extensively on French art of the 19th century\, as well as on 20th-century and contemporary art.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Christa Donner and Andrew S. Yang
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Christa Donner and Andrew S. Yang \n\n\n\n\n“As warm-blooded creatures on an intensely warming Earth\, we find ourselves seeking new ways to adapt our bodies to the planetary one—both have a fever in need of cooling.” \n\n\n\n—Christa Donner and Andrew S. Yang \n\n\n\n\nMeet the artists behind Fever Dreams of a Cool-Breathed Earth\, a multi-sensory exhibition examining climate change through the human experience of the weather. At this special artist talk\, Donner and Yang will share a deep dive into their work\, from concept to creation. Like many other American cities\, Worcester faces issues of extreme urban heat exacerbated by global warming. Donner and Yang’s art—informed by conversations with Massachusetts-based climatologists\, community gardeners\, and local residents—brings together drawings\, sculptures\, sound\, and videos in a multimedia experience reflecting our relationship with a rapidly changing world. The exhibition is on view March 28–August 16\, 2026. \n\n\n\nAdvance registration is highly recommended. A limited number of walk-in tickets may be available on a first-come\, first-served basis. Walk-in entry is not guaranteed if the event is sold out. \n\n\n\n\nGet tickets
