Inscription
Three canvas stamps, partially obscured by the top stretcher, include a rectangular excise stamp which is divided into four sections: "[4] 916 17 71"; a maker's stamp: "T. BROWN/ High Holborn/ Linen"; and a crown stamp with the word LINENS under it, and the number 99 below it.

Stephen Salisbury I to his wife, Elizabeth Tuckerman Salisbury; to their son, Stephen Salisbury II; to his son, Stephen Salisbury III, who gave the portrait to the Worcester Art Museum.
