2b. Ceremonial Centers in this cultura madre 'mother culture' of Mexico (1/3)

The Olmec developed impressive civic and religious centers. One of the largest of these, La Venta, reached its apex in the Middle Formative period (ca. 900 B.C.E. - 400 B.C.E.) with a population numbering in the tens of thousands. The style of Worcester's Olmec figure suggests that it may have originated from this regional center.
