Treatment Rationale

Since arriving at the Museum, the paintings had been repeatedly varnished over the course of more than a century. With time, these varnish applications built up in thickness, darkened, and yellowed. This change prevented an accurate appreciation of the colors and splendid brushwork in each painting. In December 2012, the Netherlands-based European Fine Arts Fair (TEFAF) / Museum Restoration Fund awarded the Museum a generous grant to support the conservation of the paintings.
