Frame Conservation: Gilding Tools

Gilding is a specialized skill that requires a delicate touch. Gold leaf is incredibly thin and easily damaged. Traditional gilding tools include; (1) a pad covered with soft leather on which to cut the gold leaf; (2) a knife to cut gold leaf to the desired size; (3) a brush used to pick up and lay down the gold leaf; (4) a brush that is used to press the gold leaf into recesses; and (5) a polished stone that is used to burnish the gilded surface to a highly reflective state.
