Frame Conservation: Consolidation of Gilded Surface

The conservators first had to stabilize the flaking surface. This close-up view shows the extent of the flaking prior to treatment. To secure the flakes, conservators used a fine sable brush to introduce small amounts of adhesive between the flakes and the wood. A combination of pressure and small amounts of moisture relaxed the flaking paint, allowing it to set back onto the wood.
