Gala Auction

What is the Grand Tour?
The Grand Tour was a European travel itinerary that flourished from the 17th-19th centuries that served as an educational rite of passage for the upper class. Its primary value lay in the exposure both to the cultural artifacts of antiquity and the Renaissance and to the aristocratic and fashionable society of the European continent. A grand tour could last from several months to several years. Many of the Museum’s founding members traveled on a Grand Tour, and some of the works in our Permanent Collection were either commissioned or purchased while on Tour.
