Educators and administrators from all disciplines and grades will experience an in-depth immersion in the study of one single work from the Worcester Art Museum collection. A study of this exemplary work—Elizabeth Freake and Baby Mary, painted by an unidentified artist between 1671-1674—will lead students to discover how immersion in one work of art can reveal a variety of opportunities for interdisciplinary and differential learning. Scholars such as art historian and museum director David Brigham (former WAM Curator of American Art), conservators Rita Albertson and Philip Klausmeyer, Women's Studies professor Claire Cummings, Food historian Kathleen Curtin of Plimoth Plantation, and others will guide us through an examination of this one painting—its style, dress, accessories, identity as a pendant portrait, and visual depiction of mother and child—to reveal the history, aesthetics, religion, literary and relationship stories that it has to share.
Hands-on artmaking (in the studio and the computer studio), creative writing, and a field trip to Boston will be tools used this immersion study as well. Connections will be made to any discipline and age group by examining a variety of concepts and teaching modalities including gallery discovery, studio creation, lecture, writing activities, reflection, and critique.
An integral part of this Arts Immersion Institute is the development of a five-lesson curriculum unit by each student to be implemented in each participant's home school in the fall. A sixth day-long session, to be scheduled in December the class and instructor's convenience, allow participants to share, discuss, and reflect upon their curricula. A curriculum specialist will be available during the Institute and the fall to assist teachers in creating these lessons.
This Arts Immersion Teacher's Institute is funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council; participants will receive a $200 stipend upon successfully completing the curriculum review in December. Call 508.799.4406 x3007 for more information or an application.
